Edinburgh Tours: All 58 Compared, With the Gate Price Beside Each (2026)
Edinburgh tours split into three kinds, and only one of them is a ticket with a guide attached. There are the ones that hold an Edinburgh Castle slot for you, which matters more here than almost anywhere in Britain because the castle sells dated, timed entry and states that once a date sells out online there are no tickets at the gate either. There are the ones that reach places you cannot reach alone at all — the South Bridge vaults, a closed close under the Royal Mile, a Highland glen four hours up the A82. And there are the ones that walk streets which cost nothing, where the fee is the guide and nothing else. This page puts all fifty-eight tours covering things to do in Edinburgh on one table, sorted by the time each takes, and prints the official gate price of whatever it gets you into so the arithmetic is visible before you book.
Quick answer Which tours buy something you cannot buy at a gate, and which are a £23.50 ticket with a guide attached
Four kinds of tour here buy something no ticket office sells: the underground vaults, which have no gate and open only with an operator; the Highland coach days, which cover 400 miles of road you would otherwise drive; the distillery trips, because Glenkinchie is unreachable without a car and a driver who is not drinking; and a castle tour on a sold-out date, which is the only remaining way in. Everything else — the Old Town walks, the Harry Potter walks, the hill hikes — takes place on streets and hills that cost nothing, and there the fee is the guide.
Key takeaways
- Under two hours: the vaults hour at £19.44 (about $26), or an hour inside Holyrood Distillery at £27 (about $37) — the time table has the rest
- One full day: the Glenfinnan and Glencoe coach at £45 (about $61) or Loch Ness with the extras inside at £66.30 (about $90), both twelve hours or more
- The castle is the only thing that sells out. Its own ticket is £23.50 online (about $32) and there is nothing at the gate once a date closes — which is what the castle tours are really for
- If your date has gone, almost everything here has a walk-up or a bus alternative — the exceptions are the vaults, the closed closes and the three-day Skye trips
All Fifty-Eight Tours At A Glance
Every tour in this guide on one table, sorted by the time it takes and then by price. The gate column is what the place itself charges an adult for entry, so the gap between the columns is what the guide, the coach and the held slot cost you.

Listed prices and lengths are the operators' own, read on 30 August 2026; dollars are approximations at £1 = $1.36 and are never what you are charged. Where the gate column says a place has no gate, that is literal: the South Bridge vaults, the Lost Close and the private tasting rooms are opened by operators and have no public ticket at all. Rail fares are missing throughout because ScotRail's site refused every automated read on 30 August 2026, so no train price on this site is verified. Prices at four venues rose on 1 September 2026 when a temporary VAT cut ended — what changed and by how much.
Into Edinburgh Castle, With A Guide
Historic Environment Scotland charges £23.50 online and £26 at the gate, in every month of the year. What these eight buy is a held slot and someone to explain the rock — and on a date the castle's own shop has closed, they are the only way through the gatehouse.

Which Tour, By The Time You Have
Tours here run from an hour under a bridge to three days on an island, so this table sorts by the time you can give and puts the do-it-yourself version beside each.
Two rules run through it. Anything past Stirling is a whole day whatever the listing says, because the A82 and the A9 add three to five hours of driving no operator can shorten. And anything inside the city can be done for the gate price plus a £2.40 bus fare that caps at £5.70 however often you tap.
| Time you have | Take this | Or do it yourself | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| One hour | The underground vaults, £19.44 (about $26) | Nothing. The vaults are private and have no public entrance | The only block on this page with no do-it-yourself version at all |
| Two hours | An Old Town walk, £16 (about $22) | Walk the Royal Mile and the closes for nothing | The route is free; you are buying the stories and the order they come in |
| A half-day | A castle tour with entry, £35 (about $48) | Buy the £23.50 ticket on edinburghcastle.scot and take the free audio guide | £11.50 for the guide, or the only way in on a sold-out date |
| An evening | The vaults with a whisky tasting, £31 (about $42) | A dram in a Grassmarket bar and an early night | The dram is not the point; the Blair Street vaults are |
| A first morning | The food and drink walk, £94 (about $128) | The eating page and £25 of lunch | Its value is learning where locals eat, and it expires by day three |
| A long half-day | Glenkinchie with transport, £55 (about $75) | £21 at Glenkinchie's own door — with a car and a driver who is not drinking | The distillery shuts Sunday and Monday and there is no useful bus |
| One full day | Stirling by train with admission, £49 (about $67) | £18.50 online at Stirling Castle, plus a rail fare we cannot verify | The shortest honest day trip; the castle is the whole of it |
| Twelve hours | Glenfinnan and Glencoe, £45 (about $61) | Hire a car for the day and drive 350 miles | The cheapest Highland day sold from the city, and nobody has to drive it |
| Three days | Skye and the Highlands, £180 (about $245) | Drive it yourself over the same three days | Skye is not a day trip; anyone selling one is selling a coach window |
What The Platform Price Buys, And What The Gate Charges
Most tours here wrap an entry the venue sells itself, so the useful comparison is the listing against the gate price plus the fare you would otherwise pay. On some of them that gap is a guide worth having. On others it is £11.50 for a queue that does not exist.
Take the castle, the biggest single gap on the page. Historic Environment Scotland charges £23.50 online, about $32, and the walk up from Waverley is free. The guided walks with entry included run £35 to £51, so the gap is £11.50 to £27.50 — about $16 to $37 — and what it buys is a licensed guide for 75 to 120 minutes and someone else holding the booking.
On an ordinary February Tuesday that is a straightforward choice you can decline. In August it is not a choice at all: the castle's own calendar empties weeks ahead, HES states plainly that once tickets sell out online there will be no further tickets available at the castle, and the tour operators hold their own allocation. That is the single most useful thing to know about Edinburgh tours, and it is why the castle ticket page exists as a page of its own.
Where the tour is the only door
The chambers inside the South Bridge vaults have no ticket office, no published gate price and no public entrance; the same is true of the Lost Close under the Royal Mile and the private tasting rooms behind two of the whisky listings. Nothing on the platform there is a mark-up on a public price, because there is no public price to mark up — the £19.44 hour underground is the cheapest indoor hour in the Old Town on any measure. The Covenanters' Prison at Greyfriars works the same way: the kirkyard is free and open at all hours, the locked enclosure at the back is not.
Where the guide is the product
Every walking tour on this page walks streets that cost nothing. The Old Town walks run £16 to £18, the Harry Potter walks £15 to £18, and a three-hour Old and New Town circuit £35 — for routes you could take with a map for free. That is not a criticism, it is simply what you are buying: two hours of someone who knows which close is which, at roughly the price of two pints.
The hill hikes are the extreme version. Arthur's Seat has no gate, no ticket and no closing time, and a guided sunset hike is £45; you are paying £45 for company and a route on a hill that is free at every hour of the year.
Where the coach is the product
The day trips invert the arithmetic. Loch Ness is 160 miles each way and the coach fare of £56 buys almost none of the attractions: Urquhart Castle is £14 online or £16 at the gate, the cruise is £22 for an adult, and on most listings both are extras chosen at checkout. What £56 buys is 320 miles of the A9 and A82 that somebody else drives. The same holds at Stirling, where the castle is £18.50 online and the Kelpies and Loch Lomond cost nothing to look at, and at Rosslyn, where the chapel is £12 and the £63.33 day is almost entirely transport.
The one pass on the page is the exception worth checking: the Royal Edinburgh Ticket at £81 covers the castle, the palace and Britannia, which come to £68.50 bought separately, so its £12.50 premium is buying the buses and, in August, a guaranteed castle entry — the pass arithmetic in full.
If The Dates Are Gone
Almost everything here has a walk-up alternative, and in August almost everything needs one. This is what to do, family by family, when the departure you wanted has closed.
- Edinburgh Castle: the one genuine emergency. If the official shop has closed your date, there is no gate ticket — the remaining routes are a guided tour holding its own allocation, the flexi ticket at £38 for any day in a seven-day window, or the Royal Edinburgh Ticket — all five routes compared. - The vaults and ghost walks: eight operators run the same handful of chambers most evenings of the year, so a sold-out slot usually means a different start time rather than a different day — the eight compared. - The Old Town and Harry Potter walks: the streets are free and open. Take the Royal Mile page or the Harry Potter page and walk the route yourself; a tips-based walk has operated from the Mile since 2012. - Whisky: the Scotch Whisky Experience sells its own Silver Tour at £25 on Castlehill, and Holyrood Distillery sells its own hour ten minutes from the Palace.
Neither needs a platform. - Britannia and Holyroodhouse: both sell at the door — £25 and £26 respectively — though the palace shuts Tuesdays and Wednesdays outside 21 May to 14 September 2026 and closes entirely when the King is in residence. - Loch Ness, Glencoe, Stirling: several operators run the same road on the same morning, so a full coach is rarely the end of it. Stirling is also reachable by train with the castle at its own £18.50 — the day trips ranked. - The hop-on hop-off buses: the Lothian network is £2.40 a journey and caps at £5.70 a day, goes everywhere the open-tops go, and never sells out — the fare table. - No alternative: the three-day Skye trips, the Lost Close tasting and the ghost bus are single-operator products. If the date is gone, it is gone.

The planEdinburgh Tours: Questions
What is the best tour in Edinburgh?
For a first visit, a guided castle walk with entry included at £35 (about $48): it holds the one slot in the city that sells out and explains a rock most people otherwise walk round in silence. For a second day, the underground vaults at £19.44 (about $26) are the only tour here that reaches somewhere you cannot reach alone. Both sit on the time table with their alternatives.
Are Edinburgh tours run in English?
All fifty-eight run in English. Several of the castle tours also run in German, Spanish, Italian and French — the kilted-guide tour and the first castle walk both list five languages, and the departure time differs by language, so check which slot you are booking before you pay.
Can I book an Edinburgh tour for the same day?
Usually, for the walks, the vaults and the tastings, which run several times a day. The Highland coaches leave between 07:00 and 08:00 and are best held the day before. The exception is anything including castle entry in August, when the fortress's own calendar empties weeks ahead and the tour allocations go with it.
Which Edinburgh tours can I cancel free?
Fifty-one of the fifty-eight cancel free up to 24 hours before the start; the terms are printed on each card above. The entry tickets are the stricter ones — read the cancellation line on the Britannia ticket, the palace ticket and the Dungeon ticket before booking a fixed date.
Do I need a tour to get under the South Bridge?
Yes, and it is the only thing on this page where that is true. The chambers inside the South Bridge have no ticket office, no published gate price and no public entrance; operators hold the keys and open them on scheduled walks. The eight vault and ghost tours are compared by which chambers each one actually enters.
Is a hop-on hop-off bus tour worth it in Edinburgh?
Rarely, as transport. A single Lothian fare is £2.40 whatever the distance and taps cap at £5.70 a day, against £19.80 to £26 for an open-top ticket, and the city centre is walkable end to end. It earns its price as a sit-down commentary loop or as the way to reach Britannia in Leith without planning a route — the fares in full.
